Fredericia, Denmark, May 25-28 2006
This year it was a choice between the TRX bike-weekend in the Harz in Germany and a short fishing break to Denmark. The trouble with being human is that man can not do 2 things at the same time. Only women can ;-) Anyway, the idea was to go to Grenaa in Denmark but the MS Signe that I sailed on last time is doing to well and you can't book a place ahead anymore when you are on your own. So I opted to go to Fredericia as the MS Neptun in the same area would take me on board. I had a lucky break with the weather as most of europe was troubled with downpours. It was windy and cold but dry and sunny most of the time. Lucky me. Here's some pics of the MS Neptun sailing from Skaerbaek harbour, the choppy sea, how comfortable fishing from Fredericia harbour is and how crowded it gets at Middelfart when a few garfish are there to be caught. I gave that a miss...

May is the beginning of the flatfish season in this area, thoiugh you can still catch cod and summerfish like herring and garfish the boats in the area mainly target the flatfish. To attract the attention of the big guys you need striking teasers like the one in the palm of my hand. Anyway, this is what they do from boats like the one I went on. So here come the fishy pics. No monsters here I'm affraid. The fishing wasn't too hot as even the fish were deterred by the prolonged period of low temperatures and strong winds. Nirmally the Fredricia harbour will be filled with herring at night at this time of year. But now there were just a few about. But some of them were quite large like the one picture here. The nice thing about fishing for herring with a small feather rig plus pilker is that you get all sort of surprise catches. It is a lucky dip really. Sad story is that the nicest catch was nicked from the freezer... Anyway here's some flatfish, the one with the rough skin is a flounder, the pretty orange dotted ones are plaice and the other one is a dab. All nice to eat except for the flounder. So it lives to entertain me next visit
.

Oh, and here's a tip for the amateur photographers: check if there's dirt on your lense before you use the camera. And not when you are back home and disappointed by the 'David Hamilton effect' at the centre of each photograph....
