Grenaa, Denmark. May 4-7 2005
As I am now hopelessly hooked on sea fishing it was inevitable that I would visit Denmark again. This time not in Fredericia. The closing of the harbour when ships dock make it a less desirable place. Even though the fishing is great and the herring fishing from the quay is a unique experience. So this time I travelled another 100 miles north to Grenaa. A place where shore fishing from the harbour and beaches can be combined with boat fishing trips. I stayed in the Grenaa Youth Hostel where they'll deepfreeze your catch if you ask them to. After a 560 mile ride I arrived in a sunny Grenaa and started the fishing trip from the harbour head. Just behind the Stena Line Terminal at the harbour. There were many fish to be caught, mainly flatfish. Not all as small as this specimen.

There is the occasional cod(ling) to be caught. But mainly by night. And as a man does need some sleep sometimes I didn't go fishing at night. I did catch a few small codling right between the rocks and they were very dark for codling. Beautiful little fish. Thursday morning I spent at the Kattegat Centre, a sea aquarium. Worthwile just because of the huge sharks. After that I went fishing at Fornaes. Just north of Grenaa. The beach north of the lighthouse unfortunately didn't produce many fish this time around.

There were quite a few fisherman in sea with waders. I thought they were fishing for sea trout but it turned out to be garfish they were after. As I had brought some good casting floats I went after those fish from the beach and caught a few garfish myself. I filleted a few of those as they make good bait and I was running out of logworms and ragworms in a hurry.

Friday morning I had booked a fishing trip on the MS Signe. An old but trusty boat. As the sea was a bit rough we didn't set out to the wrecks that are in the deep waters. So there was litlle chance of big fish. But the smaller fish suited me fine actually. This wasn't the biggest cod I landed, but one of the nicer fish. The biggest one -just to give you a ball park figure- was around 2ft and weighed about 6 lbs. But there were quite a few approaching that mark.

I also caught one coalfish. That was a first for me, they are not common in Holland and there were just a few caught on the boat on the day. This one was caught on the top hook on an imitation squid and on the 5 oz. pilker at the bottom I hooked this cod. I had a number of double hook-ups. Testimony of the abbundance of fish.

Here's a few nice cod in the basket. I released a lot of size fish but also took about 15 home in fillets. Lovely table fish.
At night I visited the Grenaa pier again. This day there were quite a few 'big weevers' caught. They are always a tricky customer. Spiky spiky fish and so lively that is is very easy to get scuffed by one of the gill rakers or spikes on the back. And if that happens you are off to the hospital. The only poisonous fish in Denmark. So I was well cautious with them.

Anyway that was all for this trip. Weather forecasts weren't much good for the Saturday so I left for home a day early. Still a few fish left there for me to come back to some other time. Or for you if you are interested. If you want some more detailed info on the fishing spots, boat hire etc just drop me a line. My mail address is at the bottom of my homepage.
